Alaska

Alaska

The word Alakshak means "continent" in the Inuit, because everything is larger than elsewhere. Still, Alaska covers about 1,717,854 km ², which is three times that of France and 18.7% of American territory!

When America was Russian ...

In 1784, the Russian trappers established trading posts of permanent addresses on the Aleutian Islands and on the American Pacific coast to California. In total, forty strong Russian emerged over several states.

In 1825, a treaty prohibits the Russians to establish new forts outside of Alaska and the United Kingdom obtained a right of way along the narrow coastal strip. Can Americans purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867, which became a Territory August 24, 1912 and entered the Union as the 49th state of the United States January 3, 1959.

An organic economy

Alaska's economy is based on a combination of its business segments. Thus, fisheries, timber, raw materials and oil lead to wood processing and the food industry related products from the sea. Several military bases are also located in the state.

Land to protect

Craggy and rugged mountains calottées eternal snow maze of Inside Passage, glaciers, misty islands, volcanoes unstable, giant lakes, fjords, islands, rocks, icebergs ... that's what Alaska is made. This area offers landscapes in perpetual motion, it is possible to see 24/24 in broad daylight in summer! In winter, it's just the opposite, the villages are very isolated from the world because of the snow.

It is here that we find the largest national parks of America. As large as Lorraine, Denali National Park and Preserve is dominated by Mount McKinley, the roof of the top of its 6195 yards America. Wrangell - St. Elias National Park is the largest in the country, with 53,000 square kilometers (the size of the Auvergne and Brittany met).
A dozen other National Parks and Preserves protect a large part of this huge territory still coveted by mining and oil companies. Among the best known include the mountain and sea Kenai Fjords National Park, Glacier Bay icebergs, or Katmai National Park and Preserve, driven by the mysterious Valley of 10,000 smokes, carved in volcanic dust saffron.

The active volcanoes are numerous in Alaska, but mostly, glaciers cover more than 41,000 square kilometers, producing multiple icebergs. There are more than 3 million lakes and 3,000 streams with the Yukon, the most famous, winding over 2000 km. Hence the frequent use of the aircraft as a means of transportation!

The Gold Rush

Discovering Alaska, you will walk in the footsteps of the first visitors who crossed on foot the Bering Strait. You will then discover the world of trappers, sailors, British and Russian whalers, and that of the workers of the railway, prospectors and adventurers, the best known remains Jack London.

Your journey will be fed to the legend of the Gold Rush in the Klondike or that of the Alaska Highway, built at full speed during the Second World War to prevent the Japanese invasion. The era of the gold seekers pursuing their dream by the terrible Chilkoot Trail, which inspired Charlie Chaplin one of his masterpieces, is told in the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park in Skagway.

Less well known, the history of the Russian Empire tells the foot of the extinct crater of Mount Edgecumbe where Sitka, whose churches and museums in the Sitka National Historical Park remind Russia of America and Tlingit Indians, a people who thought he could withstand the tsars in the early nineteenth century.

The aurora viewing is an activity particularly popular with travelers. We also recommend that you take advantage of racing sled dogs, like the Iditarod Race which takes place in winter, following a course of not less than 1850 km.

In summer and autumn, bear watching salmon fishing is an unforgettable sight.

The trip in the Aleutian Islands is a unique experience. Sometimes there is just as sea eagles that pigeons St. Mark's Square! Thousands of whales inhabit the waters of Alaska during the summer. They make a beautiful interior seaway cruise.

Alaska is just magical!
